"VCE" ELECTRONIC MODULE

A high-performance drill with excellent overload capacity and is ideal for demanding industrial applications, inline design with “D” grip.

The VCE version maintains constant rotation speed, which is ideal for efficient drilling operation and also for work in vertical  supports.

It is the perfect drill for producing large diameter holes in metal, wood or masonry, with solid drills or crowns.

 



The instructions contained in this manual must be strictly
followed, it should be carefully read and kept close at
hand to use when carrying out maintenance on the
indicated parts.
If the machine is used carefully and normal maintenance
is carried out, it will work well for a long time.
The functions and use of the tool you have bought shall
be only those described in this manual. Any other use
of the tool is strictly forbidden.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• See “Safety Instructions” manual, supplied with this instruction manual.
• Warning! When drilling in amianthus/asbestos and/or silica stone, the dust produced is extremely harmful to your health. Wear protection against inhalation of this dust, in compliance with current regulations on accident prevention. Follow the insurance company’s safety instructions regarding the responsibility of employees.
• For your personal safety, always connect the machine to a mains supply protected by a differential and thermal cut-out switch, in accordance with regulations on low-voltage wiring sitemaps.
• Do not perforate the machine casing, as this would destroy the protective insulation (use adhesive labels).
• Always unplug the machine before doing any work on it.
• Warning! Before each use, inspect the plug and lead. Should they need replacing, have this done by an official service centre. Only plug the machine in when it is switched off.
• Always keep the lead out of the machine’s working area.
• Only plug the machine in when it is switched off.
• Do not allow the machine to get wet, nor should it be used in wet environments.
• When using the machine, always wear safety goggles, gloves and non-slip footwear, and it is advisable to wear ear protection.
• Do not touch the bit during or immediately after working, as it becomes very hot and can cause serious burns.
• Hold the machine firmly by the handle and the auxiliary handle, otherwise the recoil produced could cause the machine to work imprecisely or even dangerously.
• Always use the auxiliary handle.
• Never attempt to clean off dust or shavings resulting from drilling when the machine is operating.
• Do not use diamond core bits.
• When drilling walls, ceilings or floors, take care to avoid electric wires and gas or water pipes.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION (Mod. FPN35/2VCE)
A mechanical percussion unit generates the power necessary for hammer drilling in stone or concrete.
Additional features of the hammer drill:
- The  machine  is  equipped with a safety clutch or mechanism which operates when a bit seizes up, protecting the user and the machine’s electro-mechanical parts. The clutch is released automatically. Warning! This machine must not be used with hole saws, core bits, etc, as they tend to jam in the hole easily. This would cause the safety clutch to trip out too often.
BEFORE USING THIS TOOL
WARNING! Before carrying out any work, check, for instance, using a metal detector, that there are no electric wires or gas or water pipes under the surfaces you wish to work on.
Make sure the mains voltage is correct: it must be the same as that on the specification label. Machines with 230V can also be connected to a 220-V mains supply. To turn the machine on, press the ON/OFF switch F and keep it pressed down.
When the ON/OFF switch is released, the machine stops.
For permanent operation, press the switch and lock it (Fig.3) by pushing the retainer button G on the actual trigger. For accurate drilling it is advisable no to lock the switch.
WARNING! Always disconnect the plug from the socket before doing any work on the machine.
1. Drill chuck
Changing drill chucks
Quick fitting drill chuck:
Insert it in the tool and tighten with drill chuck key uniformly on each of the three holes.
To remove the drill chuck:
Hold the shaft at gap C with a wrench and turn the drill chuck in the opposite direction of operation.
2. Mains connection
Warning! Connect only to a single-phase AC current supply and only to the mains voltage specified on the rating plate. Connection to sockets without earth protection is possible as the appliance features protective class II insulation according to European Standard EN50144. Radio interference suppression complies with the European Standard EN 55014.
FUNCTIONS
1. Speed change
The drilling machine has a mechanical speed change incorporated (Fig.1).
The mechanical speed change is situated on the side of the head and is operated by turning the lever. The lever should not be forced when changing speeds. If there is any difficulty, gently rotate the drill spindle until the teeth engage. Mechanical speed change should only be carried out with the machine stopped.
2. Electronic speed selection (mod. FTN16/2VCE and FPN35/2VCE) VCE machines feature dual electronic adjustment for torque and speed control with speed stabilisation. The
VCE device is specially recommended for drills with large bit capacity under heavy-duty conditions.
This dual electronic adjustment feature makes it possible to adapt the torque and rpm settings to optimal levels as required by the material.
On cast iron and high strength steels, low speed is advisable. On plastics, timber, aluminium, copper, soft bronze and
brass, high speeds are advisable.
3. Electronic torque adjustment
These machines are also equipped with an electronic safety clutch which can be adjusted with an external rotary knob to control the maximum current, and thus indirectly control the torque setting. The user can also preset the maximum torque, depending on bit size, to prevent any twisting of arms if the tool becomes seized in the working material.
WARNING! “TORQUE CONTROL” This machine has an adjustable motor torque. When it is adjusted to the maximum value in manual jobs, it could cause muscular injuries to the user. It is therefore recommended that position 3 on the regulation wheel is not exceeded. The machine is supplied to the user adjusted to position
3.  This can be changed, for example, for supported work, by slightly loosening screw 1 and freeing arrow 2 (Fig. 6).
4. Electronic speed control
VCE machines are equipped with full wave control, which is adjustable by means of an external rotary knob to allow continuous control (step-free) of the rpm and ensure smooth operations.
A speed-measuring dynamo provides feedback to ensure that, for each preset control value, the speed remains constant for any load condition ranging from zero-load to full power.
The VCE device also features gradual start-up from slow to full speed, thus avoiding a current peak which exceeds the 16A rating of the quick-blow fuses or the automatic short-circuit relays.
Impact mechanism (mod. FPN35/2VCE (Fig.2)): With the impact gear shut off, the drill can be used as a standard drill: In this case, rotate the ring (A) towards
the drill bit.
Impact drilling: Rotate the ring (A) towards the sign of the hammer.The impact strength can be adjusted in accordance with
the hardness of the material to be drilled, positioning the impact control ring in an intermediate position.The change-over to impact drilling can be operated even
under operation.
WORKING WITH DIAMOND CORE DRILLS (Fig.5)
Our FPN35/2VCE machine lets you use 36 to 152 mm diamond core bits. These bits are used to drill the materials most used in making partition walls in general construction (concrete, blocks, brick, etc.). The process for working with these bits is as follows. Begin making the hole with a centering bit located inside the drill. Do not use this bit after it has drilled 5-10 mm into the material. Then, continue work by fitting the core bit into the hole you started. Holding the machine securely, drill smoothly with drill function (never use diamond core drills with hammer function).
When drilling cement, let the drill cool for about 10 seconds for every 20 seconds of use in order to avoid overheating.
As an accessory, we have a centering piece for guiding the centering bit to begin the hole and avoid slippage. This accessory is also useful as a stop to mark the depth, and to extract bits of material that may remain inside the drill.
NOISE AND VIBRATION
This tool has been designed and made to reduce noise to a minimum. However, in spite of this, in certain circumstances the maximum noise level in the place of work could exceed 85 dBA. In this case, the operator should wear ear protection.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE
WARNING-Always unplug the machine before carrying out work on it.
-  When you notice a decrease in hammer output, take the machine to an Official Service Centre.
-  Tool inspection: Using a blunt cutting tool leads to less efficient work and could damage the motor, therefore cutting tools should be sharpened or replaced as soon as any wear is noticed. Daily: Clean the tool holder.
-  Inspect the mounting screws: Regularly inspect all the mounting screws and ensure they are firmly tightened. Should any screw be loose, tighten it immediately. Failure to do so could put you at serious risk.
-  Motor maintenance: Take the utmost care to ensure that the motor winding is not damaged and does not become damp with oil or water.
-  Brush replacement: The brushes disconnect automatically and should be replaced after 150-200 hours use or when they are less than 10 mm long. Have them replaced by an Official Service Centre.
-  Clean the machine thoroughly after each use with a blast of dry air.
-  The vents of the machine should be kept clear at all times.
-  Check that the mains lead is in good condition. If it is not, take it to an Official Service Centre to have it replaced.
-  Use only Freud accessories and spares. The parts the changing of which is not covered in this instruction manual, should be replaced in a Freud Official Service Centre (See Warranty/Official Service Centre address leaflet).
