SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

• See "Safety Instructions" manual, supplied with this instruction manual.

• WARNING! When sanding materials such as lead paint, certain types of wood and metal, the dust produced is harmful/toxic. It is important to determine whether the paint being sanded contains lead or not before starting work. Protect yourself from inhaling this dust, in compliance with current regulations on accident prevention, by wearing a mask designed for working with lead paint and fumes.

• WARNING! Pregnant women and children should not enter any area where paint is being sanded until it has been thoroughly cleaned. Pregnant women and children are at greater risk from lead poisoning.

• For your personal safety, always connect the machine to a mains supply protected by a differential and thermal cutout switch, in accordance with regulations on low-voltage wiring sitemaps.

• Do not perforate the machine casing, as this would destroy the protective insulation (use adhesive labels).

• Remove the pin from the base of the plug before carrying out any adjustment, repairs or maintenance.

• WARNING! Before each use, inspect the plug and lead. Should they need replacing, have this done by an official service centre.

• Always keep the lead out of the machine's working area.

• Only plug the machine in when it is switched off.

• When using the machine, always wear safety goggles, gloves and non-slip footwear, and it is advisable to wear ear protection.

• Hold the machine by the insulated grip areas when carrying out any operation in which the cutting tool may touch hidden or its own lead. If a live wire makes contact with any of the machine’s exposed metal parts, it may give the operator an electric shock.

• Hold the machine firmly in both hands.

• Make sure that the belt is not in contact with the part to be worked on before switching on.

• Keep hands away from rotating parts.

• Do not put the machine down whilst it is operating.

Use it only when holding it in your hands.

• Do not allow the machine to get wet, nor should it be used in wet environments. Do not allow the surface of the part being worked on to come into contact with water.

• Do not touch the sandpaper during or immediately after working, as it becomes very hot and can cause serious burns.

• Never attempt to clean off dust or shavings resulting from sanding when the machine is operating.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

WARNING! This belt sander is designed for use exclusively with wood. Any use differing from the above is  strictly forbidden. Belt sanders are devices equipped with powerful motors and an “endless” abrasive belt, which rotates at great speed over two rollers. These tools are perfectly adapted for grinding large amounts of material in a short time: for instance, they are ideal for rough-grinding wood, for rough sanding, for stripping painted wood... However, they are not at all suitable for achieving a fine finish.

BEFORE USING THIS TOOL

Before using the tool, make sure the mains voltage is correct: it must be the same as that on the specification label. Machines with 230V can also be connected to a 220-V mains supply. Before plugging in the tool, always make sure that the trigger switch works properly and returns to the "OFF" position when released.

FITTING AND REMOVAL OF THE ABRASIVE BELT

WARNING! Always make sure that the tool is switched off and unplugged before fitting or removing the belt. Follow the steps below:

Pull out lever A completely and fit the belt over the

rollers. Make sure that the arrow on the back of the belt points in the same direction as indicator arrow K on the tool.

Once the belt is fitted over the rollers, push lever A

back to its original position.

Adjust the belt tracking: switch on the tool and make

sure the belt is properly aligned. If the edge of the belt sticks out beyond the edge of the steel plate B or is more than 6 mm from its inside edge, adjust the belt tracking with the adjuster screw C.

DUST EXTRACTION

WARNING! Always make sure that the tool is switched off and unplugged before fitting or removing the dust bag. The dust (sawdust) produced while sanding is extracted into a sawdust collector bag. To fit the bag, follow the steps below:

Fit the collector bag (dust bag) E on the sawdust

extraction tube D. Push it firmly onto the sawdust extraction tube D has far as it will go to avoid the bag E coming off during

operation. If the machine does not extract all the dust, this is probably due to the quality or moist character of the material. Blow off the moist dust particles. TIP: For best results we recommend emptying the bag E when approximately half full and shaking it slightly to remove as much sawdust as possible.

ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROL

(only mod. FBS100CE)

The electronic speed control I enables the speed of the sanding belt to be adjusted in different positions numbered from 1 al 6. To increase the speed, turn the control I towards number 6, to decrease the speed, turn towards number 1. Select the appropriate speed for the finish required and the part you wish to sand. CAUTION: The speed control I may be turned only between numbers 1 and 6. Do not force the control beyond these positions, otherwise it may break and fail to work.

STARTING THE TOOL

WARNING! The tool should not be in contact with the surface of the part to be worked on when you start or stop it - otherwise this could cause defective sanding or damage the belt. To switch on the tool, pull the trigger switch H. Release it to turn the tool off. and press the blocking button G. To stop the tool when blocked, pull the trigger H again and release it.

WORKING INSTRUCTIONS

To begin sanding, first hold the tool firmly in both hands. Switch on the tool and wait until it reaches the required speed. Then carefully place the tool on the surface of the part to be sanded. Keep the belt against the work constantly and move the machine backwards and forwards without pressing too hard. Never force the tool. The weight of the tool is sufficient to give adequate performance and pressure. Excessive pressure may cause jamming, overheating of the motor, burning of the part being sanded and recoil. Use the right type of belt for the surface being sanded and the desired results. CAUTION: Whilst sanding, always keep the lead to the back of the machine to avoid it getting caught.

DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY

We hereby declare, under our sole responsibility, that the FREUD products described in this manual FBS 100,FBS100CE comply with the following standards or standard documents: EN 50144, EN 55014 and EN 61000-3 in accordance with EU Directives 73/23/EEC, 89/336/EEC, 98/37/EEC.

NOISE AND VIBRATION

The machine's noise and vibration levels, measured in compliance with EN 50144, usually reach:

Acoustic pressure = 91 dB(A)

Sound-power level = 104 dB(A)

Use ear protection!

Vibration acceleration = 2.6 m2

ACCESSORIES

Accessories and their corresponding order number can be found in our catalogues.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE

WARNING! Always unplug the machine before carrying

out work on it.

- Inspect the mounting screws: Regularly inspect all the mounting screws and ensure they are firmly tightened.

Should any screw be loose, tighten it immediately. Failure to do so could put you at serious risk. - Motor maintenance: Never press too hard when using the sander. Excessive pressure may produce an overload and damage the motor or the part being sanded.

- Brush replacement: The brushes disconnect automatically and should be replaced after 150-200 hours’ use or when they are less than 10 mm long. Have them replaced by an Official Service Centre.- To clean the sander thoroughly after use, unplug it from the mains and use a dry brush to clean all orifices.- The vents of the machine should be kept clear at all times. Use a clean damp cloth to clean the protective covers (do not use solvents, petrol or turpentine).- Check that the mains lead is in good condition. If it is not, take it to an Official Service Centre to have it replaced.- Use only Freud accessories and spares. The parts the changing of which is not covered in this instruction manual, should be replaced in a Freud Official Service Centre (See Warranty/Official Service Centre address leaflet).
